Inventory Labels

Barcode Labels have been used for decades in supermarkets to automate and speed up the check-out process.

How to use Barcode Labels for Inventory Purposes
Many companies are now using barcodes as inventory stickers within their business to label, identify and track products and assets.

Barcodes are very versatile in the way that they can house data. The physical size of the barcode is dependent upon how much information is required. It is easy to adapt the information required in a barcode to your personal specification (sometimes without specialist hardware or software) making it possible to make changes to the information presented. For instance, the barcode may house a sequential number which (when scanned) may link and reveal much more in-depth information. This method enables the information to be edited without the need to change or remove the barcode label.

Sometimes it is required for barcodes to reveal and house a lot more detail and information on its parts or product. Therefore, the barcode needs to be much bigger to include all of the data. An example where this would be useful is; if a service engineer is working on a product off-site, they need to be advised instantly of any important information and the label can do this whilst housing more data.

Inventory barcode labels could be manufactured either way, dependant on location and whether the label is permanent or not. Another feature to consider is human readable data. This could be useful if (for whatever reason) barcode hardware or software were to fail or not be available.

Which barcode Hardware and Software is best?
A question we are often asked is which hardware and software is suitable for our customers applications and this is a difficult question to answer generically because it depends on many variable things.

Firstly, how much data the barcode needs to hold and reveal when scanned is important when choosing a software package. The size and density of barcodes change dependent on how much data they store so it is important to be aware of this before beginning your search for software.

A software package may be determined by what it is you are using the barcode for. Is it; stock control, asset management or something else? As always hardware has to compliment software so it is advised to use a company that offers both to provide the best solution. Hardware may be used in extreme environments in which case it is very important to have a scanner that can withstand that. A scanner may need to be portable for using whilst off-site or in different locations and there is also options for this too.

Lastly, the hardware and software have to compliment your choice of barcode and successfully scan the information on it. Whether it be a plastic or metal option, GSM Online Label Sales can offer robust barcode labelling options.
