Laser Marking & Engraving – Still Hot Stuff
Recently, we have seen an incredible increase in the number of enquiries and orders for blank labels to be engraved or laser marked in-house or on-site.
Lets explore the options for either engraving or laser marking detail onto metallic plates.
Engraving
Engraving is the method of using a sharp tool (known as a burin) to directly cut into the metals surface and therefore leave a permanent mark. The burin can be directed as required to add more or less detail to the plate, as required.
Laser marking
An alternative to engraving is laser marking. Another method that will permanently mark the surface of the metallic plate. This method is where a laser beam replaces the burin to react with the surface of the metal and produce detail.
Laser marking detail can vary in density to produce darker or lighter contrast to the metals. This is useful if the design or logo on the plate needs to be shaded or graduated.
An interesting and notable observation from laser marking is that when aluminium is laser marked, it is generally hotter than when stainless steel is marked. This may or may not help when making your decision as to what material to use.
